For Participating Teachers

Young Authors’ Program is a great opportunity to utilize pieces from your students’ writing portfolios. While a writing portfolio does include an element of publication, Young Authors publications extend this to a “real life” experience in the process of writing and publishing.

Here are some suggestions for making Young Authors a successful project for your students:

• Teach writing using the process approach.
• Create a classroom environment that values and promotes the student as writer.
• Encourage all students to participate. Stress participation as well as “winning.”
• Display the guidelines and timelines in a prominent place for reference
• Discuss the elements of a story: character, setting, plot, and organization.
• Display and discuss a variety of book styles.
• Ask parents to assist with conferencing, organizing, etc.
• Celebrate writing! Display Young Authors’ works in the school library or share with peers and other classrooms.
